Dr Maria Sharmina takes part in the Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport Forum policy conference
7 May 2021
The event focused on the next steps for transport decarbonisation in the UK, including low-carbon fuels, infrastructure, sector-specific targets and policy development.
Maria spoke as part of the panel on ‘Developing the Transport Decarbonisation Plan’, alongside participants from Rolls-Royce, Octopus Electric Vehicles, and the Department for Transport. Discussion topics covered low-carbon and alternative fuels, transport electrification, EV rollout (including developing the market and industrial base, addressing cost and commercialisation challenges, and building national charging capacity), and policy trajectories for reducing the UK’s transport emissions. The policy conference was chaired by Lord Teverson from the APPG on Electric Vehicles and Tim Yeo, former Chair of the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.
The event was very technology-focused, so it was a good opportunity to add a perspective on the need to change lifestyles and practices, partly based on Tyndall’s recent Climate Policy paper about decarbonising the critical sectors.
