Conference presentation entitled 'Coalfields Reimagined: Driving Social Sustainability Through Mine Water Heating'

2 May 2024

Jingyi Li attended the 2024 Mine Water Geothermal Energy Symposium, where she delivered an oral presentation entitled 'Coalfields Reimagined: Driving Social Sustainability Through Mine Water Heating’.

The presentation discussed the fundamental reasons for deploying mine water heating in the UK and the role it can play from the perspective of social sustainability. These are the preliminary findings of the CO-OPERATE project, collaborating with Dr Alejandro Gallego Schmid and Professor Cathy Hollis. In particular, Jingyi addressed the importance of managing expectations by ensuring information transparency at all stages of communication, including streamlining the licence and permission-granting process, and redefining the costing model to internalise the ‘external costs’ in order to alleviate the financial burden of deploying a niche low-carbon technology in less economically developed areas.

The oral presentation can be obtained upon request by emailing Jingyi Li at jingyi.li@manchester.ac.uk
