Incentivising responsible sourcing of cobalt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
26 September 2024
New article published on measures to incentivise responsible sourcing of cobalt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Tyndall Manchester researchers (Maria Sharmina and Xintong Cao), collaborating with the researcher (Rosa M. Cuéllar-Franca) at the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Manchester, published a new systematic literature review paper on Resources Policy. This paper identifies nine sustainability risks that need to be addressed in the cobalt supply chain, analyses measures for incentivising responsible cobalt sourcing, and maps links between the sustainability risks and the measures, to elaborate on the engagement of downstream stakeholders and identify methodological gaps.
Integrating artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) into the cobalt supply chain while further formalising the entire ASM sector is identified as the key to addressing most sustainability risks.
