Optimising Water Usage in Future Homes

Tyndall Manchester researcher, Claire Hoolohan, travelled to the Palace of Westminster to talk about reducing water demand in future homes.
Claire Hoolohan (Tyndall Manchester) spoke at an Industry and Parliament event on Optimising Water Usage in Future Homes. Her talk at the House of Commons commended the focus on reducing domestic water use, but highlighted the need for greater attention on the link between energy and hot water use in homes. Claire outlined a diversity of perspectives on the future of housing emerging from research on the Ofwat-funded Enabling Water Smart Communities with Ella Foggitt (Tyndall Manchester) and Alison Browne (Geography, University of Manchester). She drew attention to the need for coordinated action well-beyond the water industry and called for greater understanding around how to move beyond water efficiency to achieve more radical reductions in domestic water demand. This was an exciting opportunity to contribute to such a topical area of policy with multiple recent government consultations around the issue of reducing water use in homes.
Claire contributed to discussions between parliamentarians and industry representatives around the highly topical issue of working together on the challenge of residential water demand.
